I'm curious as to how they'll regulate this surplus thing. What are they basing it on? A certain percent of people on the server who are XX level? Or will it be done by class? Say the average highest level of Gladiator is 60, does that then prevent EVERY gladiator from getting past 60? Or will be be guild/friend list based? I'm not whining about it, I'm just overly curious. Regardless of this surplus issue (or the 48 hour cool down) I'm still going to play the damn game.

As far as I know it's just in how long you play a certain class, but I suppose no one really knows the full details. I really don't have an opinion on this. In theory it sounds rather craptastic, but I'll have to see how it pans out in the game. I haven't played beta enough to really find out. I've been too busy just exploring. Tongue

I know what they are doing in theory, they think they are rewarding the players who cant log in as much, making it a little easier for them to catch up. I am all for that, however this system seems more like it penalizes the people who play more/longer.

Would make a lot more sense to leave the whole surplus thing out and have a bonus boost for people who haven't logged in for a while. Makes more sense than stopping the people who want to get everything they can out of something they pay for.

Just my opinion though, can't see the system staying in place very long. I can't imagine there is any positive feedback for it.

That is an excellent idea. I just left it in the feedback section :3

lawl, well it's not supposed to be a pleasant expression, it's the only insult we got for hardcore gamers XD

And yeah, I'd rather they reward people with extra xp a la WoW.

Heh, poopsocking. I remember grinding to 20 in a day on WoW. Lots of the magical gummy bear drink.

I seem to have lost my pie cutter.

Well, it might also be to slow people down. If the game is currently focused more on the levelling process rather than endgame, it makes sense for them to add things like this to make sure it takes a while for people to hit endgame rather than having it done in a week.

I think, knowing SE, they may also be trying for a sort of pacing process to give the characters you play a more natural feel. Give you a connection to the character after having to spend more time building that character, therefore making you more attached and more interested in continuing. HOWEVER, in the western mindset of gameplay that will not fly more than likely. I don't mind it as I will be playing hardcore enough, but am never interested in shooting up levels in an abnormally short amount of time. This will probably help me to actually d something else besides level and quest as well. I never did much of the crafting business in FFXI and I felt bad for it, but there was a great deal else on my plate is all.

BTW, there is plenty of insult flung towards hardcore gamers. I mean look at society...they don't exactly push younger generations towards below ground, practically cave dwelling stasis while glued to a television or monitor...then again looking at society more closely...maybe they do.

This is true, most westerners want to be the highest level they can be as fast as possible. I've always enjoyed wandering around to grinding. I actually don't get how people can enjoy grinding, it just gets so boring after a while. Usually, the only reason I leveled up in WoW is because you had to be a certain level to be able to craft higher level items. From what I have seen with FFXIV here is that you actually don't have to fight at all, you can just level yourself up with crafting and material farming. :study:

Although, I can understand how grinding can be a good thing: Say you have friends that are quite a few levels above you and you want to play with them at their level? Time to grind. This is when I got to lvl 20 in a day with my all powerful Magical Gummy Bear Drink (Not made with real gummy bears. No gummy bears were hurt in the making of this post.)

I seem to have lost my pie cutter.

I think the worse thing about this system is IF it remains as it currently is now, it will punish casual players as well. It just needs to be adjusted to be way less harsh. It's REALLY harsh now, literally forcing even a casual player to level SEVERAL other jobs, and craft, and gather... not just one or two extra ranks.

It also doesn't help that SE is focusing on a system labeled as "negative reinforcement" instead of labeling it as positive reinforcement.

WoW did exactly this in beta. They created a system where if you were playing nonstop you'd be fatigued... if you logged off in an inn you gained "rest" and thus weren't fatigued anymore. People hated this, they complained... and Blizzard listened. So all they did was take the EXACT SAME system they had started with and called it something else. "Rested XP." Now the "you are fatigued" experience became "normal xp" and the "You are not fatigued" experience became "Bonus, rested xp." Seriously, that's all they did, relabel the system... but that's all it took. Positive reinforcement vs. Negative reinforcement.

The XP rate outside of guildleves is extremely low and random. Sometimes you get 200 skillpoints, sometimes you get twenty, or none at all. They need to make it consistent, so that players can figure out what is best to grind on outside of leves. Of course, the Surplus system doesn't help...
