Let's take a look at L'yhta in the field.
What... is in your character's bag?
A length of rope, a water skin filled with water, a smaller water skin filled with something harder (beer, wine, or possibly liquor), various dried meats, a few potions, a tin of tea, a bunch of gil, an old leather bound journal, a quill and ink, a sheaf of paper in a leather folio, and a book of arcanima geometries. Depending on where she's been and where she's going, there might also be a small goldsmithing toolkit and some Garlean magitek parts.
Her pouch of candied fruits is on her belt for easy access, naturally.
What do they consider essentials for survival?
Jellied fruits and tea, obviously.
More seriously, though, she feels her voice and her staff are all she needs to survive. While she's intellectually aware of the potential dangers of the field, she can make water and fire through magic, and she's pretty sure she could construct a shelter magickally if required.
What are their keepsakes that push them forward?
Unsurprisingly to anyone who meets her, L'yhta considers her book of arcanima and whatever staff she's carrying at the time to be her most important possessions. They're not exactly keepsakes, however. Perhaps the closest thing to a keepsake she has are the three linkpearl studs in her right ear.
How much room is there for things to collect from the wild?
There's not a tremendous amount, but then, she can always teleport back home. At any rate, she rarely strays too far from a settlement of some sort, since she rather enjoys the creature comforts of society -- such as warm beds and enclosed privies.
How much Gil would they carry on their person?
Far too much to be sensible; 25,000 or more in coins, bearer bonds, and letters of credit. It's split between a belt pouch and her backpack.
If they have a chocobo they would haul...?
The entire backpack. L'yhta generally keeps everything other than her belt pouches of gil and candied fruits and her staff (or book) on her chocobo, Shera, or more commonly these days, strapped to her magitek Reaper. She likes her chocobo too much to risk her getting hurt in the field. Chocobos can die, while magitek just breaks down and needs to be repaired.
What kind of things would they leave behind?
She'd prefer to carry all of her staves, a sword, and some enchanted armor with her, but she's aware that they're too likely to get lost and, in a pitched battle, she wouldn't have the opportunity to use them anyway. She also leaves behind most of her clothes and tools of vanity, figuring that they're too likely to get dirty in the field, and she wouldn't need them there anyway.
What would they discard that you currently keep?
The various body parts and secretions of creatures, which while useful for crafting, would definitely provoke an, "Ick," from L'yhta. "I'm not skinning that peiste! And! Did you see where that web came out of that diremite? Ew!"
