I liked the Warriors of Darkness. Too bad they're gone already (damnit I thought Ysayle and Haurchefant appearing would be the only time FFXIV could drive me to tears). Yoshida and SE outright fib when it comes to story aspects, such as saying how 2.55 was the ending of the 'story of the south' (it wasn't, with the Ul'dahn interregnum), and how the Warriors of Darkness were the 'new protagonists' (and now they're gone).
It's fine to fib on that though, since it keeps us guessing. |

I'm happy the Warriors of Darkness got a resolution, but i'm not happy with many things about it; that it was done in a single-player instance, because I expected at least a trial, a la Chrysalis; that it was so abruptly, after all this build-up, and that we'll probably never see them again after this point.
Way to drop the ball, SE. Edit: With the supply of crystals to the Amalj'aa to summon their gods by the Ala Mighan Resistance, this may mark a turning point in Edgar's character development. He keeps tabs on Primal summonings in Eorzea, so to learn that they went that far might push him to keep watch over the Resistance as well. Interesting... |

I don't think I have anything to say about this patch.
Bland as bland can be? |

I kept making assumptions that Yda might actually be the daughter of King Theodric of Ala Mhigo and is last heir to Ala Mhigo. She never showed her face, and the way she panicked at the end of 3.4 in Southern Thanalan where that Ala Mhigan guy recognizes Yda and talks about him knowing her father and all kind of hints something related to royal blood of Ala Mhigo.
(and Yda did use Final Heaven at 2.55 story which I think only WoL and Theodric are the only ones that could have used that kind of power besides her) Also Griffin obtaining Nidhogg eyes makes me think that Nidhogg will come back....again by 3.5 to 3.55 last time. Except it won't be Ishgard once more, but different approach. Â And yes, I did see Nidhogg spirited away in the sky at the end of 3.3, but it does not mean a spirit can't come back down once more x_x And Alisae's rune blade seems like it's a Limit Break lvl 3 of some new class that is accessible for 4.0 in the future. Except I doubt it'll be Alisae that will be teaching us the new class/job. Possibly Red Mage or Blue/Rune Mage? |

I freakin' KNEW the eyes would be back. Why did they think throwing them off the bridge was a good idea? Some horrible trench-critter (or, like, a dragon, because they can fly) would probably find them first if the Ascians didn't. I mean, god, from the moment it happens you know they'll be back. Even before you see Blanhaerz leering down from the cliffs and doing something with a linkpearl. The moment they wind up for the pitch I was like NO STOP
I'm a little suspicious of Yda but I'm even more suspicious of Papalymo. Why does he seem to have so much of a problem with Yda and the Ala Mhigans? That look he keeps giving her at the end really makes me wonder. |

Don't forget Papalymo has Tupsimati now too.
re: Eyes, I immediately knew throwing them off was a bad idea. Maybe it wouldn't be possible to skewer them with Estinien's spear or something but they must have had some way to store them safely and separately in Ishgard. |

The Eyes of Nidhogg. The fucking eyes.
Honestly, what was Aymeric thinking? "Let's throw these incredibly dangerous and powerful items that can regenerate an ancient wyrm full of hate and rage down a pit and just hope nobody ever finds them"? I mean, I get that the immediate reaction was to get them away from Estinien for...reasons, but you witnessed first hand that draconic corruption can make Nidhogg come back! Your first priority should be moving them away from Estinien, and then firing the eyes onto the surface of the sun! |

Honestly, straight up...
I think he was thinking "I want to approach my long-term crush dearest friend and see if he's alive without being possessed myself by a vengeful shade". He knows he carries Ratatoskr's blood and is therefore more susceptible to transformation than Alphinaud (who is Sharlayan) or the Warrior of Light (whose only canonical backstory is "not from Eorzea", aka not Ishgardian). I think he was literally, foolishly, just thinking in terms of how to get through the next 5 seconds. |

I understand that line of thinking, but unless I missed some dialogue, I think Aymeric honestly forgot about the Eyes of Nidhogg. It'd have been much more consistent and forgiveable if at least after the fact and after Estinien is saved, he says something along the lines of "We really shouldn't have thrown the Eyes of Nidhogg away so that anyone can find them", or at least acknowledges that it was a decision that will very definitely come back to bite Eorzea in the ass.

It's not bad writing on the part of Aymeric hastily tossing them off a cliff, it's bad writing on the part of having the Ascians just be able to so easily retrieve something that shouldn't have been retrievable. The eyes were frozen solid at the bottom of a supposedly bottomless pit; how the FUCK did the Ascians retrieve them?

Dinner scene was all right. The WoL's fears over poison were well-handled and I was pretty charmed by the glee in Aymeric's reaction when I suggested he come with me on the next adventure.
I am apparently a sucker for the sentimental because the koboldling's story and the altered Titan fight really got to me. I didn't like the Warriors of Darkness being resolved so quickly, in the first patch where we really interact with them as more than a looming, foreshadowed threat. Not great pacing, and it undermined their previous build-up. I think they would have been better resolved in 3.5 or similar. As far as how the actual events played out, I'm fine with those; I just think they happened too fast. Verad Bellveil's Profile | The Case of the Ransacked Rug | Verad's Fate Sheet

I thought MSQ was really good this patch on the sole basis that it didn't focus at all on Ishgard's perfect, flawless resolution and how much of an amazing person Aymeric is.
The Ala Mhigan Resistance's representation was very nice (reckless, self-absorbed and self-righteous), and if they do away with that and make its key players shining beacons of good and justice in 4.0, as they did with Ishgard, I will be very disappointed. The Warrior of Darkness, now there's a real human bean. |
