As far as your FFvii RP roots I have a similar story. First RPG I played was FFviii, before that I was all Sonic, Tomb Raider, Madden etc. so when the game asked me for my name after the opening scenes I just entered my own name.
After that, the game referred to me by name when it came to becoming the best SEED I could be.
 I know it's a very basic practice now but at the time it was a revelation to me. Changed my whole video game outlook and made me a lifelong FF diehard.
