I play an Au Ra dark knight and here's my advice: Do not have your backstory revolve around it. Find an IC dark knight that can teach you in a plotline.
When you play an unconventional race/job combo, you are taking a very difficult challenge and you just can't take shortcuts. In my opinion, to intertwine a Xaela backstory to ishgard is too much of a stretch and you are going to miss out on a lot of race flavor.
I do not mean to discourage you. But as someone that has been burned on the forum for this very question I feel like I should warn you.
