They both just happen to be at the same places at the wrong times, and basically get partnered up or something. Derrick isn't really a mean guy, though if he is annoyed, he will pissed. Other than that, he's a very optimistic guy, with few social issues. So he basically gets along with almost everyone he bumps into.
