New Person - Balamb - 07-20-2013

Hello! I've been lurking on here for the past few days, so I thought I should join up.

I'm a big Final Fantasy fan, but I'm new to FFXIV - I didn't have the opportunity to play 1.0 as I don't have a gaming PC. Will be playing ARR on PS3.

I've took part in RP in the past, particularly in WoW, but I found it of unreliable quality. I have higher hopes for this game!

As a side note, I wanted to ask for some advice - as an EU player, can anyone give me an idea of what the majority of us who want to RP are doing? I've come across posts suggesting we go to Balmung/Gilgamesh, and others who say they're choosing an EU server.

I know all servers are based in NA, but I'm worried about the timezone difference amongst players. Still, I worry that an EU server will have very few roleplayers.

Anyway, sorry for the long post!

Welcome to the RPC, I'm fairly new myself but they are a friendly bunch here.

As a few EU roleplayer I can only suggest that you have a look at the various threads and discussions about where EU roleplayers are going and make up your own mind.  The two main points of discussion seem to be:

  1. Do you want to play on a new server where everyone is starting at level 1 (Gilgamesh) or are you happy starting on the legacy server (Balmung) used by roleplayersd an others during the initial release of the game, so it will have high(er) level characters already but also an established roleplay community to a certain degree.
  2. Do you want to play on a nominally NA based server, so the majority of players (roleplayers and regular) will come from NA time zones, or do you want to play on an nominally EU based server, so the majority of players will come from EU time zones.  Note there are no RP designated servers, in NA or EU, so EU servers may have few if any roleplayers.
I'd like to draw your attention to this thread where we're gauging the interest to have an OOC Linkshell (chat channel) for EU roleplayers on Balmung.

Good luck.

Welcome, Balamb Smile!  I'm sure someone will be able to get the answers you seek regarding EU choice for an RP server, but until then, why not fill out a listing on the Role Play Directory and let us know a little more about yourself?

Hope to see you around and about the forums Thumbsup!

Thanks for the advice. The Linkshell sounds like a very good idea, it would make playing on a majority-NA server a bit easier.

Thank you. I'd like to post in the directory but I'm not sure which to post in as I haven't chosen a server!

You are a gentleman/lady and a scholar. Final Fantasy VIII was my favourite, so I highly approve of your avatar and name. That all being said, welcome aboard. I'm a newbie too, so welcome to the daunting task that is exploring and discovering all that the world of Final Fantasy XIV has to offer. I don't know much about what to suggest to an EU player, but I do know that 'Balmung' is the 'Legacy' server where the majority who began in 1.0 are continuing their RP (though it's just as open for folks who are just getting their start in 2.0. I know my whole free company group are brand new to FF XIV and we're all going to Balmung)--and Gilgamesh is what it seems a majority have unofficially claimed as a 'totally clean slate server' for folks who are just starting. Whatever server you go with I'm sure you'll find awesome RP. The community seems pretty involved and excited.

Yo! Welcome to zee RPC~ If you're up for a little walk down lore-lane and haven't stumbled across it yet, I suggest the 1.0 sum-up post here. There are also plenty of great linkshells to looks over, including the previously mentioned one. i would~ like to point out however that even in not-specifically-EU shells, lots of people have weird hours, including myself, that cross over with EU schedules quite often. So in many cases, you'll probably be fine even if your shell isn't EU based.

Thank you! FFVIII is my fave too, most underrated game in the series.

Yeah, I think I understand the server situation now. I'm leaning towards Balmung, but I've got a while to think about it yet.

Thanks! Yes, I came across that post recently, it's very helpful for newbies like me.

I think Linkshells will be a good way of arranging RP, I'm just hoping that there will be enough people on at EU peak times for spontaneous stuff.

Welcome, welcome!

Speaking of Linkshells, I'm not entirely sure if it'll fit into your time zone, but I do know that there's a LS here on the site specifically for 'late night' players (in the US), so that might be of some help (forgive me if my time zones are completely wrong of course).

The Night Shift!
