Just officially preordered the CE! Big Grin

I still had $20 credit from buying Red Dead Redemption on Amazon.com and release date shipping was only $.99 for me so since Amazon doesn't charge you tax it ended up being $56 for me. :cheer:

I swear there's no point to go to Game Stop anymore... sides the only one in my town is in a mall that doesn't open till 10am and never does midnight releases.

Also what happend to that tumbler cup thingie? I thought that was in the CE? O.o

To the best of my knowledge, the CE always contained an early release, a security token, a little certificate you get mailed, an early release, an artbook, exclusive box art, an early release, a pre-order item, an early release, an early release, the game itself, and an early release.

I paid $50 extra two get two copies eight days early. I have worked very hard on trying to regret this decision and have not yet done so.

This, is approved with a big stamp of awesomeness. *places stamp*

I love to hear people who like manly characters, big and tough with beards and all Tongue Because I pretty much always play girly, boy-characters. If not, total weirdos.

Anyhow, going into the beta again and play for some more hours today! See if anything changes for me. And most importantly for me; Can I play my Miqo'te as a male, or young boy?

Re: Now that we're in Open Beta, what do you think? - Lunaticked - 09-04-2010

I enjoy it. I love to walk around and take in the sights.

My issues though..

I NEED RP. Need it. And one person trying the beta who was interested in RP'ing with me decided not to because there wasn't around room to type out anything meaningful. This character limit on what we can say in a single message is ridiculously small. There is no room to form a coherent thought, nevermind a small paragraph.

Synthesis needs a tutorial.

The entire UI really needs an overhaul and some degree of customization.

I have no idea what monsters I can fight and which will do 2500 damage to me in a single shot if I so much as look at them wrong.

Completely agree with you, Luna. I'm also in the need of RP!

I've been walking around in Girdania (that's how you spell it right?) and sitting at the little lake near the Chocobo stables a bit.

Should you see me around; Samaeriel , a Miqo'te (though my char is a boy pretending to be a girl!) with messy, dark blue hair ^^ Always in for some RP, because that's how I get to know the game better!

Could designate that spot a mini RP meetup area, actually. It gets foot traffic, but if people are sitting around it, could indicate "Hey! RPers!"

Yep! Good idea! It's the little lake just off the Adventure Guild thing in Girdania, pretty much one of the first places you will pass along your ways while questing in the city. But I'm propably changing my character soon-ish again, the name doesn't suit the race in my opinion. And maybe another city, I'm oblivious of all the other spots we could use to 'hang out' as Roleplayers.

I'm actually parked there right now, watching people go by.

Well, if you head to the big U I can hang with you on Rev, but Farah's staying in the wonderful place of trees and happy and green stuff.

Re: Now that we're in Open Beta, what do you think? - Zyrusticae - 09-04-2010

Heh, my first post here as a complete an total newbie to the Final Fantasy MMO universe:

- Crafting drives me up the friggin' walls. I kinda like the fact that most people won't see equipment upgrades until they're well into their teen levels, as it makes them a really big deal compared to, well, every MMO out there, but OHMYGOD could they have made it ANY more newbie-unfriendly?! I predict a huge falloff as players just try to get into it and FAIL and FAIL and FAIL and FAIL and FAIL SOME MORE FOOL over and over and over and over again. It's ridiculous. There's no curve to it whatsoever. It's completely, unfailingly unintuitive and completely, unfailingly unforgiving. If Square is serious about drawing customers that were turned away by FFXI they have GOT to do something about crafting, especially since it's the ONLY way to get new gear.

- The game requires a gamepad. Absolutely no question, you will not be able to enjoy this game with a mouse and keyboard. Or, rather, your experience will be completely compromised without one. It's possible to enjoy it that way, but I'd rather run far, far away than contend with the horrible UI lag with a mouse and keyboard.

- You have to make macros to quick-switch classes. I'm just... scratching my head with this one. You have to make macros. Or else you get to manually, slowly, painfully reassign every single action every time you switch classes. Which, uh, kinda defeats the purpose of such a feature in the first place, doesn't it? ...I think the UI designer at Squeenix needs to be replaced. ASAP. Seriously. Too much fail here. It's inexcusable.

- Guidleves. I don't quite understand them. I mean, I understand they work best in groups so you can just keep chucking out quest after quest, but the loooong cooldown and the automatic failure on disconnect (lol, and with a game that crashes this often) is pretty, well, unforgiving.

These things aside, though, my impressions are largely positive. But then, I have a high tolerance for BS (hell, I played APB for about 400 hours over the entirety of closed beta and the first month of release...), and I can see many things that will turn off less-hardcore players, which is a bad thing as that's exactly the customer base Squeenix was trying to attract with XIV in the first place. But, well, I can see myself getting into it, as the ambiance and the immersion and everything is more well-done than any game I've played in recent memory. Just have to get past those little niggles...

And the crafting. Oh, boy, the crafting...

I lol'd when I got killed in one shot by a goat standing outside the city entrance.

Other than that I don't really have an issue with anything yet. The targeting in combat has a learning curve, and coming from WoW I really miss my jump. Running into dividers in town and not being able to jump over them is bothersome. "look its a hand rail. I'll be the gentleman and go around" But really I just want to jump over it.

Yes the small chat area is a bit bothersome and I don't think there is any way to /emote an action. I'm used to /emoting a paragraph in prose form with not just dialogue but facial and b ody movements. Kind of impossible here :\

I don't mind the learning curve for crafting. :o I like that it seems like recipes are hidden and you need to do some experimenting to make things. Besides there will be sites that will have recipes on them. I'm thinking about making a cookbook myself. If you do the first local guildleves it does actually give you a tutorial, it just does it all in the chatbox.

Yes UI customization and eliminating UI and mouse lag. Waiting 30 seconds for a menu to pop up when you are crafting is inexcusable.

There is something of a con system, I think something when you target them is supposed to show up red, but I'm not sure what it is, only overhead this from someone else.

Re: Now that we're in Open Beta, what do you think? - Pippa - 09-04-2010

Well, I'll give you a bit of my history and then explain my thoughts on FFXIV.

I've been MMO-gaming since 2002 and I have played pretty much every MMO there is. I have a few favorites and I have a few that I absolutely detest, one of which happens to be FFXI. I played that from launch until a few months in and then of course on and off over the years to see what they've done with the place.

Unfortunately I never got very far in the game because there were several things I just couldn't stand about it. I hated the fact that it took forever to tweak the graphics and that it was such a process and even then I couldn't make them look anywhere near as nice as some of the screenshots I've seen (and I've always played games on a top of the line machine). The keyboard controls, and I'm sure most will agree with me, were horrible and really hard to get used to. Last but not least the combat was mind numbingly slow. During the time it would take to kill a goat or a goblin, I could have popped out three kids. It was just not my type of game.

Then in comes FFXIV beta and of course since its a new MMO I had already pre-ordered the CE. It doesn't matter that I hated its predecessor, I feel I'm pretty open minded when it comes to games and I like to give them all their fair shot.

So far, I can tell you that from the minute I loaded up the game I was already liking it. I felt like the character creation (comparing of course only to FFXI) was such a better process. I love the fact that there are actually more than three looks per class and that you can customize your character a lot more than you could in the past. I've spent hours so far in character creation just checking out the different looks you can create.

Sidenote: More hairstyles, in my opinion, are desperately needed especially in the way of the Lalafell. Four hairstyles is simply not enough to distinguish ourselves from one and other. I'd prefer 8-10. Just my thoughts on that.

Graphics are visually stunning, especially compared to anything on the market right now. I feel that it gives AoC and LotRO a run for their money, big time.

Sidenote: I do have one annoying problem, maybe someone reading can tell me what the heck to do. I have an ATI Radeon HD 5870 and the darn game keeps tearing. It obviously needs Vsync & Triple Buffering but I have no idea (new to ATI) how to enable these for the game. It does not work the same way as it does for Nvidia cards.

This time I've hooked up an Xbox360 controller (after fiddling with the keyboard/mouse for a bit). That definitely improves gameplay by a good 99%. It makes it easier to move around, target, kill, etc. It just makes the entire experience so much better.

As far as combat goes this time around, I feel like it is vastly improved. It's much speedier than it was in FFXI and that will help me, personally, to stick with the game a heck of a lot longer than I did in FFXI. I feel like when I hit a skill its actually doing something and I don't feel like I'm waiting 10 years to hit the mob.

The cities are also really improved. Aside from the instancing into NPC dialog, I've really not experienced any form of instancing. I'm wondering, at this point, if there even is any? I would have to assume there is, but I have yet to stumble across any.

There is one major downside so far that I've noticed and thats the chat box. The chatbox is astronomically small and the print is way too big for such a small box. They really need to rework that, pronto. That is going to make RPing very agitating especially if more than one person is speaking at a time.

Overall, vast improvement over FFXI. I do think they've learned some things from their time making & managing that one.

There are definitely things that could use polishing and there are several issues here and there, but overall I think they have a solid product to work with and I'm very excited to see where they go from here.

My apologies for my book, but... well this is what I think! Tongue

So far I think the game looks good. I’m not terribly impressed by menu navigation, or the hoops you have to jump to just to change jobs. And right now because you are only able to do guild leve’s for leveling or just grind it’s turning into an issue. If anyone knows how to do local levels I would love to know they let you pick them up but right now they look grayed out and unusable.

/em and /emote work, but you still gotta pretend to be an ADD twitter user with your words.
