Seeing as I know so little about the FFXIV universe, I think picking a pre-established clan is a safer bet than attempting to create my own. On that topic, though: I've seen that it's quite common for groups of Xaela roleplayers to have their own original clan. Is this usually a case of creating new characters under the name of the clan, or is it common for characters to distance themselves from their old clans and form new ones ICly?
I've found most players default to one of the preestablished clans. But it's certainly not a requirement. The official forum's post goes into this well by one of the lor creators.
