Alpha testing is necessarily exclusive, and turn around time for decisions on who gets in can take a while. Remember: It's not a club you're joining. The developers need to pick out people that they (a) think will be able to adequately test the system and (b) aren't going to go blabbing about what they see. To be quite honest, I'm surprised there's a public alpha invitation. They're usually done in-house, and with people the company trusts.
