That's my stance and people can disagree, I'm cool with that, that was the point I Think.

He didn't understand. Now he does, because you did clarify! So thanks again on that! Smile

I remember, back in the day, when we could discuss potentially volatile subjects like rational individuals, without everyone jumping down each other's throats.

Lia, you explained what I meant quite well, so thank you for that.

Now I think everyone should be friends and eat these delicious churros.

responding just to the op, I don't see profanity as breaking immersion or anything.

Just, on a personal level, I'm not too comfortable with excessively coarse language (by that I mean worse than fuck and shit). So If I'm RPing with someone and the worse words like "cunt" start coming out, I would ask them if they could tone down a bit, but that's just my sensitivity, not a comment on the validity of harsh swears in RP.

For me, the only language that I would really want to change due to RP immersion would probably be units of measurement when there's a canon, known alternative, ie miles to malms and so on.

As I read through the thread, the only lingering thought I had was me wondering how comfortable/okay people would be with "fuck" specifically being used in RP if NPCs used it often.

While I'm not saying I'm a fan of using things like "dude" or "wazzup" in RP, I don't think everybody has to talk in a similar nature to the NPCs in order to be believable or authentic (or even immersive, honestly).

Has to? No. But it certainly helps.

I'll happily agree that "wassup, dude" is more slightly more jarring to hear in RP than "you stupid fuckshits," but at that point we're debating degrees.

For myself again, that word doesn't annoy me that much when used correctly with justification.

When it just sprouts out randomly for the sake of edginess, though... Well, that's rather vague said like that, right? Yeah, I am afraid I can't describe it more accurately for once, but maybe I think that not trying to play a swearing, rude eorzean character more than a cursing, rude RL/generic character is the crux of the matter for me.

As I've mentioned before though, we're never going to see the word 'fuck' in the same degree we see shit (or 'shite' in ffxiv's case of using Non-NA variant of the word) while FFXIV still keeps a Teen rating.

I will often use swear words with Rhaya, myself. Especially 'hells', or 'seven hells'. (Though I did once use Hells Bells and immediately corrected myself. I'm not a wizard detective x.x)

Generally, I find it's best to use what you have seen the NPCs use, but occasional usage of things they haven't said is perfectly fine in my mind. I've been guilty of dropping the f-bomb from time to time, myself.

Ultimately, I find that as long as you do your best not to break immersion, and it makes sense at the time, you should feel free to use swear words to your heart's content.

RE: [NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it? - Lost River - 11-22-2015

Lost River loves to curse. She calls a lot of people damnable whoresons; whores, bastards, shite for brains, and many other things. . . wow, she sure isn't proper for a Lady Blackheart. Is she. Oh my.

Roegadyn women ahoy!

RE: [NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it? - Lost River - 11-22-2015

I'd also go with some other forms of spoken curses. Like using the word soddin' and such.

Also, while some words are fine (like fuck) I'd use it sparingly. And a phrase like "son of a bitch"

To me, "dastard whoreson of a Morbol" is far more effective than "son of a bitch". Oh my. :3

There are people who would have a problem with it even if every NPC was dropping f-bombs every other word.

Agreed.

RE: [NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it? - Seriphyn - 11-27-2015

Oh yeah, 'toss' and 'tosser' is part of the NPC lingo at least.

There are some anachronisms used (unavoidably) by players even down to sentence structure, where British and American order of words (FFXIV using the former) are different. But that gets down into the real minutiae at that point.

RE: [NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it? - Sylentmana - 11-30-2015

I try to keep my curses lore friendly. Words like "fuck" and "bitch" don't seem to fit, though they don't bother me.

RE: [NSFW] RP Discussion: Bad words said IC, for it or against it? - Vyce - 11-30-2015

The thing about cursing is that the idea comes from the fact that anything that leaves your tongue has weight. When you say something to someone, it has permanence, so you choose your words carefully.

To "curse" at someone was to wish suffering on them. "A pox on your clan." "Get fucked.". Back when it was far less socially acceptable to use "common" language, the utterance of it would hit like a bomb. Aristocrats had ways of insulting one another that evaded the use of undesirable language, but when one WAS used, it would be jarring and damning for both parties involved.

This is why Dadarupo, as prejudiced and elitist as he is, finds ways of insulting others that save face.

Instead of, "Hey Miqote. You dress like a slut. Why don't you go get fucked and put some clothes on?"

He might say to someone else but within earshot of the offender,

"You know, I just don't understand these Miqote men and their choices of fashion. You'd think they'd learn to dress themselves after a few generations in civilization. But I suppose a coeurl isn't trained in a day. Or rather, a decade."
