Wow, you know your stuff when it comes to MNK's! Super informative.

These are the sort of lore complications I don't know about yet and could slip up on when creating my character. I've definitely distanced myself from the idea of my character being a MNK, though roleplaying as just a pugilist could work!

In any case, I'd strongly suggest just focusing on the character, the job/class next! Nothing stops your character from 'just' being a pugilist. Or just someone who happens to stab people with daggers!

I'm not exactly sure how to word what I'm asking here, so bear with me... but would it be acceptable to roll a class such as NIN but ICly just be something of a Rogue? Like, instead of being a highly skilled, disciplined ninja trained in [ok apologies I have no idea where they originate from], could I have it that my character is that class due to circumstance?

For instance, I'm fairly certain that my character will belong to the Dhoro tribe, who are described as being elusive and that they employ the use of lookouts to stay out of sight. Could I roll a NIN with this being my characters' background, but avoid things such as artifact gear and roleplaying any NIN powers?

No one will care what you are as a class OOC! Just level whatever you like. And that's also the great thing about FFXIV, unlike WoW, you don't have to reroll another character to be another class Smile

Like I run around as a SCH or WHM often because I like some of the gear, and use the (non job) gear just because I fancy wearing them for RP. Everyone does this I assure you.

However with Ninja/Rogue you get different animations in your running style if you have the soulstone equipped! But really, your OOC class/job really doesn't matter ^^

Good luck!

RE: Hello! New to FFXIV and rather overwhelmed - Warren Castille - 12-20-2016

As mentioned, almost no one cares what your PVE levels or stats are in roleplay. In fact, the game strongly "encourages" you to change from "class" to "job" at level 30 in the form of completely removing your new skills and iconic abilities! That doesn't stop anyone from roleplaying base classes, custom classes or whatever they feel best represents them! For every Dragoon running around, we've got as many thieves, wrestlers and barmaids. Don't feel constrained by the class system! Roleplay what you like and people will respond to it.

Absolutely! I actually have all classes leveled to at least 50 and OOC I main Warrior actually, but ICly my character is a gladiator and a musketeer. Now, when I'm in a position where I need to RP out using my sword or gun I'll change jobs to Paladin or Machinist for the armor and weapon I need for that scene (since I have both classes leveled). ICly, she's not a Paladin or a Machinist either, but I use the classes for the weapons.

So if you like Monk or Ninja, play monk or ninja! Get the gear, dress your character in monk/ninja-esque gear, but then figure out what exactly they are. You say a lookout or scout, a Dhoro tribal who is stealthy and hunts unseen. I'd say this fits the Ninja and Archer aesthetic very well. Whether or not you choose to actually be a true ninja is up to you, or if you just want to use the skills and aesthetic in your RP.

Here's a bunch of lore on the various classes and jobs in Eorzea.
You can find out more about Ninjas and the lands they come from here.
More Monk lore can be found here if you're still interested.

I don't really have anything major on archery, except for some snippets of how the guild in Gridania was founded from the Trappers' League I was looking up for some other post...

This is extremely reassuring news!

I think I've seen the NIN run animations before. I don't think I'll be employing the Naruto run any time soon, hahaha.

Quick non-RP related question: when you say you use non-job related gear, what does that refer to?

Ahh, fantastic. I'm so glad to read all this. I love the idea of custom classes! I was worried as I didn't think my character would fit any of the official classes perfectly, but the idea of rolling as one but giving it an IC twist is a great fix.

Thank you for the reply!

(Apologies for removing much of your message in the quote - didn't want to page stretch)

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out with this. It's much appreciated. Totally clears up what I was worrying about in terms of choosing a class/job. I love the idea of switching between OOC jobs in order to equip weapons needed for IC actions. It sounds like the ability to play multiple classes allows for much more flexibility when it comes to creating a custom class for your character.

Also, thank you again for providing helpful links. I'll definitely give them a look - especially the information on NIN and the lore on Eorzea's jobs/classes!

You're in excellent hands here already. Once you've got your character ironed out and have a better idea of what you're going to plot as a direction, I'd suggest creating a Making Connections post if you aim to try and get into RP as quickly as possible. That'll give you a pretty big leg-up on things right out the door!

Glad to be here!

I'm not sure how long it'll be before I've sorted everything out with my character... I've been sitting in character creation for a while, but tbh it's just making me feel pressured into choosing things I might regret later on, so I'll probably hold off actually creating my character until I've got everything planned out.

Thank you for the suggestion - I'll definitely make a thread over there once I'm ready! Super excited to get involved aaaaah.

As someone who was in your position 4 months ago? Whew, yeah, it's like drinking from a firehose pretty much, 'cause it's a totally new game, with new lore, and you want to get it right. The best advice I can offer you is choose something that you find aesthetically pleasing and would love to use- a blank slate. Leave the concept on the table for now as very general and vague. Then, just focus on leveling up, getting through the MSQ, and scouting / lurking the community. You can take your time with fully developing your character over the month it'll probably take to do all this- and honestly, your design will probably change a few times with all the lore you'll be digesting from doing the MSQ (not to mention playing with the all the classes your character can actually be). Reading the lore is vastly different from living it, too. In essence, you're taking the time to 'bake' the character to be ready for RP and giving yourself leeway to learn everything you can, too!

This is pretty much what I did- my first month was spent mostly OOC, figuring out how I wanted to do Kasi. By the end of that month, Kasi's original concept had changed maybe 3 times in pretty drastic ways (like originally I wanted to do Bard, but ugh, I ended up hating the job)- but then, there was a clear direction in mind, and everything fell into place. As soon as the stars align, and you know where you want to be, finding linkshells and free companies is as easy as pie!

Hi! I'm new(ish) to ffxiv as well (also coming from wow) and looking for friends to rp with! If you're not totally against the idea of getting to know and playing/rping with someone who is also new and in a similar situation to yourself, feel free to add me! Saraune Moreaux Smile

Hiya! Welcome. Glad to know I'm not the only newbie around here!

I'm totally up for the idea of roleplaying or playing with somebody as new as I am. I'll be sure to give you an add whenever I create my character. Getting into Balmung is proving... difficult... hahaha.

Thank you so much for the advice. Hearing that you were in this position only a few months ago is reassuring. I can imagine my design changing and being reshaped quite often. Already I'm having second thoughts about the original ideas I had when posting this thread, haha. I've never really dealt with creating OC's in the manner required for RP such as that in FFXIV. It'll be fun figuring it all out.

Playing my character OOC for some time in order to come to grips with the game and "living" the lore sounds like a plan.

I fret over the smallest things, like which class to start as. The sole reason for my worry being the city-state that'll be tied to my character. If only for the fact that I want with an icon that looks nice next to whichever GC my character becomes a part of. I'm ridiculous.

Woohoo! And far from the only newbie I think. Like your situation I have only the most basic of a basic outline figured out for my character, who essentially is just a wannabe archaeologist looking for other people interested in the search of artifacts, adventure, knowledge, and yes, treasure. I haven't even found a linkshell or FC yet. As for getting on Balmung, just keep trying! I'm sure you'll get in soon!

Figure it this way- the community isn't going to be going anywhere if you take that month to cook. When you're set and ready to go, just toss up a Making Connections- that's pretty much your gas pedal right there! A Making Connections post is a lot more effective too when you have a pretty good idea of what other types of characters who would interact with your own fairly well.

As for city-states? Yeah, that can get a bit murky. You can change to a different class once you hit level 15 (as well as Rogue, which you can't access at creation) though so it's not too hard to start as one class for the city-state allegiance, and then move over. Still, Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa aren't the only city-states; there's also Ishgard to the north (which is featured prominently in the game towards Heavensward), and Ala Mhigo (which was conquered and will feature prominently in Stormblood). There's also the Garlean Empire as another potential origin point for RP characters. There's a ton of options there, though they may not all look very pretty on the character sheet.

I can totally appreciate wanting to keep it nice and clean and consistent. Big Grin I did the same for Kasi.

RE: Hello! New to FFXIV and rather overwhelmed - Virella - 12-20-2016

^ We have so many places your character can be from!

Your OOC starting city has zero influence on gameplay, nor people will care. Virella is Ishgardian, she started out in Gridania OOC. Avelyn is Ala Mhigan, she started out in Limsa. Really, don't sweat it! Big Grin

Your character sounds great! I think ours would get along quite well. Mine will be an Au Ra from the Dhoro tribe, who are described as being elusive and choosing to avoid other clans. Since he has experienced little interaction with people outside his clan (including other Au Ra) he's extremely curious about the races and cultures of Eorzea. Think Ariel from The Little Mermaid, only about 7ft tall and with horns, ahaha. Reckon he will be a bit awkward, too, as he was a lookout for his tribe and his main source of socialising was exchanging information through chain of command or reporting sightings as opposed to regular conversations. A character interested in knowledge and adventure sounds like someone he'd love to spend time with - as much as his terrible social skills allow hehe.

I don't know anything about FC's or Linkshells. I know that FC's are essentially guilds but I've no clue about the latter. I guess it's something to figure out later. :+)

The struggle of getting into Balmung is real. I don't know if I should just wait and try to get in during a specific timeframe or keep doing what I'm doing right now, which is sit on the server select window in character creation and refresh it every now and then.
