[Mateus] The Death Journal - Chocobald - 08-13-2017

(Author's note:
Every time a sin is committed, a new entry will be produced.)

Entry I

You are my hero.
Were the words spoken by the Desert Rose.
Again, as I found myself on the floor with the whole world burning by my hand.
She plucks me up.
Gives me a reason to keep going forward.
Her tears are my fault.
I feel the bound pulsating inside me. Choking me.
Her smile is what I wish to protect.
The only reason to survive is that she said she wanted me to. She needed me to.
This is all new to someone like myself. Before the Desert Rose, my life was survival for survival's sake.
This is why I am keeping this diary.
I am to toss myself in the shadows once again.
A hand is forcing me to commit crimes.
Two missions, two sins.
If you find these book on the cold hands of a Duskwight, bring it to the Goblet's Apothecarium.
This is a way of completing my promise to you, Jei'me. Even if I do not return in body.

Entry II
**
The first sin I committed wasn't even asked by the hand that drags me further into the dark.
Before I delve deep in this tale, some introductions are in order.
The one eyed Roegadyn woman is called 'Eld' or how she insists to be called - 'Auntie Eld'.
I first met her when she advertised a job, a mission for those in the know.
'Rescue this Raen woman from a grim fate. Bonus if she is alive. Make her forget my face.'
I assumed this was a crime lord with a heart. One that would put gil over cruelty.
As I return from a successful mission, I confront her about this matter.
I needed to confirm she had a heart inside, beyond the layers of greed.
Instead, Eld had a strange tirade about how the Raen would suffer a slow death in the streets of Kugane.
Today, I've met the daughter of this hateful hag.
She was all alone in Ul'dah. Starring at the Moonfire Faire decoration.
I decided to talk to the poor thing.
She is training to be an alchemist. In her words
"Because I know my mother hurt others, I shall help others regain their health and spirit."
And there was the first sin I committed. I told the young woman I would help her achieve her goals.
I would turn a blind eye to the crimes and suffering the mother causes. As I try to guide the daughter.
I am choosing one over the victims of Auntie Eld because I foolish believe there is some good in the dark.
The sin of foolishness is the first I commit.
Let two others occur.

Dodo steak.
Auntie Eld dared to serve appetizers as me and the large group of hired help waited on the room next door.
Dodo steak!
As if this job was just another routine for her.
She makes threats regarding the lives of those I love and yet, now she serves me Dodo Steak.
I have given up in understanding how her mind works.
The reason for such a crowd of ruffians and mercenaries soon become clear.
We were to create a commotion to a merchant enclave in the heart of the Thanalan.
Something about them being slavers.
Auntie mentioned there is one man she wishes on her payroll - The "Mountain".
A massive Roegadyn. She insisted this guard did not want to be there and could be persuaded.
Soon the reason why she is black mailing becomes clear.
She wants me to save myself by putting another one in my place.
I decide to help.
And off to the Thanalan we go.
As the crowd of hired rogues created quite the ruckus in the streets, I tried to reason with 'Mountain'.
Yet he barely spoke Common.
I manage to look like a nonthreat to him.
'Good Man' he said to me, just after he tipped off the guards with a single word - 'Yellow'.
They operated under codes. As the guards arrive, we make our escape.
No sins were committed that evening.
However, how good can be a man who wishes to trade his position with another?

I am free at last from the clutches of Eld's dangerous game.
The tale I am about to tell is one that I do with a heavy heart.
Nonetheless, I ask you to read it until the end.
The last job was one of closure.
Using the knowledge obtained by the 'Mountain'.
A large group of hired hands, people from the shadows were summoned.
One of such people was a Raen that went by the name 'Makoto'.
She was a newcomer to this.
Draw to the promise of 'saving slaves', she wished to learn from combat.
She doesn't know who Eld is. Or cares, for that matter.
'I am not a hero' - She said.
Does one need to be one to avoid bloodshed?
Is the lure of gil, of blood, so inevitable only a hero can deny it?
Before we went to the field, Eld handed me a piece of magitek.
A button that would activate black powder previously set.
Mobile Detonator.
Eld said as long I pressed the button on her order, I would be free from her covenant.
I tried to prove to the newcomer Eld's questionable ethics.
'If you do not want to press it. Allow me.'
I considered.
But then, the words of the one called Jei'me jolted me to a decision.
'You are my hero.'
If I passed my responsibilities, no matter how grim to the newcomer.
I would only be extending the world of darkness promised by Edl.
Whatever came after the button is pressed, it was to be my fate.
The group travels to the heart of Thanalan.
In the shade, we hide.
We had a view of the merchant camp, filled with slavers and their 'goods'.
Another Raen woman, Eld's right-hand woman was busy leading people away from the camp.
'Now' - The Roegadyn woman says, venom on her lips.
And I press that awful button.
A sea of flames, as pure as the malice of the one who set up the black powder.
Springs forth in a loud explosion.
I couldn't listen to their screams of agony, only a sharp noise ringed over my ears.
The smell of charred flesh made me nauseous.
There were once merchants and their guards there.
Now there are only ashes.
I still remember glancing that device.
As I ears slowly returned to their natural state, only to hear Eld's satisfied laugh.
Did I kill them?
No.
I was accessory to their murder.
I was blackmailed to be in this position.
But I did not install the black powder.
I did not plan for their death.
My role was of the finger, Eld's finger.
She did not even try to goad me explaining what this device would do.
Yet as I struggled with that fact, it did not change a thing.
All that people died that day.
With haste, I, the Newcomer and others rushed to save the survivors, mostly slaves.
We did combat in the hellish landscape against some guards.
Desperate to continue the status quo brought forth by their masters.
I did not feel anything but the rush to save as many slaves as I could.
Once we defeated our foes and gathered the survivors.
I handed 'Makoto' my mask.
'From now on, you are to be the Silver Tongue.'
And with that, I walk away from the shadows.
Forever changed.
But still maintaining my promise to you.
I have returned alive.
No blood in my hands will keep me away from you.
I refuse to let Eld win on her twisted game.
But I must seek redemption.
On your bosom.
