An Official Hello! - Cinaust - 05-15-2017
Many of you have been incredibly helpful answering my questions in my other thread. I was originally a little uncertain of how active I would be on this site, but skimming through, the community has won me over. As such, I wanted to officially say hello and fill out that newcomer questionnaire.

MMORPG and RP Experience
I played my first game, Ragnarok Online, back in middle school. Having lived in Korea, I dabbled in Maple Story and Mabinogi for a while, but more recently I've played Guild Wars 2 and TERA Online. FFXIV has completely won me over, however, so I feel bad for my characters on all those other games;;
My first stint with roleplay was, again, on Ragnarok Online. However, who thinks back fondly on preteen RP anyway, ahaha - I'm embarrassed just thinking about it. Following that, I got into play-by-post RP on different forums and DnD a few years ago. I haven't done much roleplay on MMOs as of late, but I'm confident and excited to get started.

How did you learn about the coalition? / What kind of a roleplayer are you aiming to be?
Regarding the coalition, I came looking for it! When I played FFXIV and saw how efficient yet pleasing the character creation was (and accidentally made full backstories in my head without even planning to RP), I knew that this was a game I wanted to roleplay in. I googled for info and this site came up.
As for what kind of roleplayer I aim to be, hopefully a fun one! I consider myself a moderate and adaptable roleplayer. Each of my characters have a detailed backstory which I always have on hand, and internal consistency is important to me in roleplay.
Especially in an MMORPG, I enjoy having IC be the default rather than OOC. At the same time, I enjoy discussion OOC with RP partners to make sure we're both getting what we want out of the interaction, so I'm not the type that can be IC 100% at all times, like I know some people can be. Typically I end up matching the level of investment that my RP partners display.
My strengths as a roleplayer are cultural and individual characterization (likely because that's what I like about roleplaying in the first place). My weakness as a roleplayer would probably be my awful sense of time, and I mean that in character context. Time passes so quickly in-game - a year is only eighteen days, right? So if there are any roleplayers that are deadset on keeping to game-time and being consistent about character aging, I probably won't be able to meet that standard. I'll probably end up just having my characters age at really major official story events.
Actually, if anyone could tell me what RPers tend to do with time on FFXIV, I would really appreciate it!

About Me RL
I am but a poor college student making bad scheduling and financial decisions. I'm double-majoring in psychology and linguistics, so something I really appreciate about FFXIV is the naming conventions and how they reflect values in each race's societies. I'm interested to see how much attention, if any, was put into the phonology of each race - though I doubt it, aha. Because of that, I like incorporate the idea of dialects into my roleplay.
My primary hobbies are gaming and creative writing, so roleplay is a pretty solid way to combine the two. I like pineapples on pizza. I've lived in Korea and let me tell you, that is barely a transgression. Condemn pineapples on pizza after living in a country that thought cheesecake pizza was a good idea, ahahaha.
Character Ideas/Info
Oh boy, do I have ideas. Since I couldn't slip a character into Balmung before the servers went down, and likely won't be able to as they come up, I plan to transfer a full 8 characters onto Balmung to make the most of the transfer fee. Of course, I couldn't come up with a full eight on the spot, but I'll give brief descriptions of some I'm considering.Â
Because I'm new to the game as a whole, I made backstories that would explain away why my characters are so low-level, ahaha. I likely won't end up playing all of them equally, but I'll only be able to decide on a main once I give them all a go and see who feels right. I have names planned for all of them, but I'd rather wait to see if I can use the names before posting them publicly.

Miqo'te Gladiator, Keeper of the Moon ♂
The third son (and youngest child) of a particularly isolated Keeper family; due to a certain, relatively recent, event in his life, he felt the need to step up and meet cultural expectations by becoming a wanderer, as all Keeper men are supposed to. Because of his reclusive upbringing, large settlements and other races are foreign and incomprehensible to him. He may seem standoffish, but he's probably just confused. Because he isn't familiar with the intercultural nature of the larger cities, he clings fiercely to the traditional Keeper values he was raised with. Despite his airs of maturity, it becomes evident with some interaction that it's just a front.

Lalafell Arcanist, Dunesfolk ♂
Don't let this little one fool you - he claims to be an adult, but he's only 14 years old. He is well aware that other races have difficulty telling a Lalafell's age, so he is lying in hopes to keep his identity secret. Because of this, he is actually most wary around other Lalafells who would see right through his lies. The short story is that he ran away from home. The long story involves the reason, and he doesn't like to talk about it because, when push comes to shove, it's just him being selfish. Raised in a more traditional community, he lived a nomadic life atop the backs of migratory beasts. Now that he's made it to the larger cities, however, he is absolutely fascinated! Though he seems mild-mannered, his eyes seem to shine with wonder at every little thing.

Hyur Marauder, Highlander ♀
She grew up sick of stereotypes, the perception that highlanders are somehow less Hyur and less civilized than than midlanders. In part to counter this impression, as a youth, she ignored one of her desires - a call to combat, a pull to the sea - in favor of another: her love of finery and cosmetic appeal. Her hair is dyed a rich pink, her lips always painted. She carries her full height with an imposing elegance. However, now that she is older and wiser, she's realized that she doesn't need to live life cowing under society's eye. She has decided to embrace both her love for finery and her marauding spirit.

Au Ra Lancer, Raen ♂
Pious and diligent, he comes from a long line of retainers. However, when the old master passed and the household changed hands, the new head deemed the master-servant relationship long outdated and dismissed all Au Ra in service. Having lost his sense of purpose, this Au Ra is on a journey of self-discovery. For now, he has taken to the Lancer's guild, but he is only pursuing the job because he doesn't know what else he wants to do. This city and culture is new to him, and he feels exposed - Raen are safest when assimilated, and right now, he has been ousted from the one place he felt he belonged.

Other Concepts I'm Exploring- A Xaela Au Ra who, feeling that they burden their tribe, has set off on a self-imposed exile to the hell of other races. Everything they see disgusts them, from the wastefulness of 'civilized' culture to the insincerity known as 'being polite'.
- A Hyur Pugilist who is midlander only in the sense that she is not a highlander. She and her brother hail from the Eastern Continent, with no other family in Aldenard. Due to her brother's worsening illness, she needs money, but her options are limited due to literacy barriers. So if she has to make money with her own two hands, so be it.
- Considering transferring over a duskwight conjurer of mine, born with odd-eyes who is seeking balance in his life. He is studying conjury, in efforts to reconcile his more calculating, opportunistic side with what he feels is his duty towards the elementals.Â
I plan to make wiki pages for the ones that I end up playing. I hope some of them sound interesting to you!

Do you mean in real-time since if you put it on Eorzean time it ticks by so quickly? I'm fairly certain that's mainly just to allow you to experience the night/day cycle and the various weather effects (which come into play for actual content - certain fish only appear in certain weather patterns and time ranges for FSH). I don't think anyone really holds to that as the "real time" for the character.
We have plenty of hours-long RP events, and most usually stick to a more relative time-frame throughout. So there's no worries there. Heck, we don't always cleave too closely to how many years have "actually" past due to the time bubble situation that goes on due to time technically only passing as we get more content that explains what year it is. Or something. I'm rambly.

Oh, that's such a relief. I know in some other games, some heavy RPers are extremely time-oriented, and I would never be able to keep up with that. Thank you for your response!

Welcome to the game and, soon, to Balmung!
We have a really good community here, so feel free to post around as much as you'd like. Even be a lurker if you don't feel comfortable with it! Do you have Discord as well? A lot of us use that and there are many, many FFXIV/Balmung-related servers out there.
If you'd ever like to discuss lore or have someone to brainstorm ideas off of, feel free to message me! I'm available here, on tumblr, and on Discord as Lily#3261! Hope you enjoy your time here!

Thank you! I do have a Discord, but I'm not sure how involved I'll be in the RP community yet, so I plan to hold off on joining a server for now. However, I'd gladly discuss ideas and brainstorm on an individual basis! I may reach out to you on Discord.

Welcome! What do you think your playing hours might be? Im from EU and tend to play in the evenings (my time), feel free to poke me in-game if that's the same for you.

Hey there, and welcome aboard the RPC, and hopefully soon to Balmung!Â
Your character concepts all sound pretty awesome on the whole, too!

Ahaha, playing hours are always the tricky part. I'm in the US until May 20th, but then I'll be in Seoul until mid-August for the summer. Can't wait to see what the ping is like;;Â
But if you're in the EU, our playtime will probably overlap! I'll be sure to take you up on your offer. Thank you!

Thank you! I do hope I can transfer to Balmung soon enough, aha. I think once the servers come up, I'll make my characters and get through the beginner quests on other servers so that I won't have to toil through them on Balmung. The biggest struggle is going to be deciding who I want to play!
You've all been incredibly helpful - I hope to see everyone around!

Hey there,
As others have stated, welcome to the RPC. I quite like your character ideas. If you need a roleplay contact let me know and I'll gladly roleplay with you. Best of luck on the double majoring. That sounds pretty tough.

Ah, darn, guess I joined at a bad time. Transfers to Balmung are on lockdown due to overpopulation. Hm.Â
Does anyone have any advice on what other servers would be good for RP or is at least starting to build a community? I've heard people mention Mateus?
